Author: Dr. Charles Müller
Year: 1873
This is a reproduction print of the historical map “Empires of the Babylonians, Lydians, Medes and Persians”, drawn by Dr. Charles Müller and engraved by Edward Weller. It was published by John Murray in London in 1873 as part of Sir William Smith’s An Atlas of Ancient Geography, Biblical and Classical.
The map presents the great ancient empires of the Middle East and Asia Minor, including Babylonia, Lydia, Media and Persia. Color-coded boundaries distinguish their territories, while important cities such as Babylon, Susa and Sardis are clearly marked.
Major geographical features, including the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and surrounding mountain ranges, provide additional context for the development and expansion of these ancient civilizations. Hachures are used to represent relief throughout the map.
The original hand-colored engraved map measured approximately 45 × 28 cm and was produced at a scale of 1:14,400,000, combining detailed 19th-century cartography with the study of classical history.
