Author: Ziegelbrenner
Map created: 2010
Historical period depicted: 1400

This is a reproduction print of the historical map “Holy Roman Empire 1400”, created by cartographer Ziegelbrenner on February 8, 2010. The map reconstructs the political geography of the Holy Roman Empire at the beginning of the 15th century, illustrating the territorial divisions, principalities and political entities that formed one of medieval Europe's most complex political structures.

Unlike a centralized kingdom, the Holy Roman Empire consisted of numerous territories governed by secular and ecclesiastical rulers, including duchies, counties, bishoprics, archbishoprics, free imperial cities and other imperial estates. Its territories extended across much of present-day Germany and Austria, as well as parts of Switzerland, the Low Countries, Italy and neighboring regions. The map highlights the fragmented political landscape of Central Europe, where local dynasties, powerful noble families and religious institutions exercised considerable authority.

Around 1400, the Holy Roman Empire was experiencing a period of political instability and dynastic competition. King Wenceslaus IV of Luxembourg, who had ruled as King of the Romans since 1376, faced growing opposition from powerful imperial princes. In 1400, a group of prince-electors deposed him and elected Rupert of the Palatinate as his successor, although Wenceslaus continued to contest his removal. The empire was also affected by the Western Schism, which divided the Catholic Church between rival papal claimants. Meanwhile, the House of Habsburg was consolidating its influence in the Austrian lands, while the Luxembourg dynasty remained influential in Bohemia and neighboring territories. These developments illustrate the decentralized nature of imperial politics and the importance of competing dynastic interests.

The map provides a detailed overview of medieval territorial boundaries and the political organization of the Holy Roman Empire, making it particularly valuable for understanding the historical geography of Germany and Central Europe before the emergence of modern nation-states. It offers a visual reference for studying the complex relationships between imperial authority, regional rulers and autonomous cities during the late Middle Ages.

Created as a modern historical reconstruction, the map draws upon established historical atlases, including Putzger's Historischer Weltatlas, Westermanns Großer Atlas zur Weltgeschichte, Haacks geographischer Atlas and dtv-Atlas zur Weltgeschichte.

This reproduction is based on Ziegelbrenner's original map, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic (CC BY 2.5) license. The map is a modern reconstruction of historical boundaries rather than an original medieval document.
