Artist: Jacques-Louis David
Year: 1793

This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “The Death of Marat” (La Mort de Marat), created by Jacques-Louis David in 1793. One of the most iconic masterpieces of Neoclassical painting, the artwork depicts the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, a prominent journalist and revolutionary politician during the French Revolution, on 13 July 1793. The original painting is housed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

The composition portrays Marat lying lifeless in his bathtub, where he frequently worked because of a debilitating skin condition. In one hand, he holds a letter associated with Charlotte Corday, the woman who murdered him, while his other hand hangs over the edge of the bathtub, still holding a quill. A bloodstained knife lies on the floor, and a simple wooden box beside the bath serves as a writing desk, bearing the inscription “À MARAT, DAVID”.

David's painting is particularly remarkable for its dramatic simplicity, powerful emotional symbolism and masterful use of light and shadow. The dark, almost empty background directs attention toward Marat's illuminated body, while the carefully arranged objects emphasize the violence of his death. The composition recalls traditional Christian images of martyrdom, transforming the murdered revolutionary into a symbol of political sacrifice and revolutionary devotion.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 165 × 128 cm. David, who personally knew Marat and supported the revolutionary Jacobins, created the painting shortly after the assassination. Its restrained composition, striking realism and political symbolism made it one of the defining images of the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, as well as one of the most influential historical paintings of the late 18th century.
