Artist: Antoine-Jean Gros
Year: 1808

This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau” (Napoléon sur le champ de bataille d'Eylau), created by Antoine-Jean Gros in 1808. One of the most celebrated works of Napoleonic historical painting, the artwork depicts Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte visiting the battlefield of Eylau on 9 February 1807, the morning after one of the bloodiest engagements of the War of the Fourth Coalition. The original painting is housed at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France.

The monumental composition portrays Napoleon on horseback, surrounded by French marshals, officers and soldiers, surveying the devastating aftermath of the battle against the Russian and Prussian armies. Around him lie wounded and dying soldiers, while survivors struggle amid the snow-covered battlefield. Napoleon extends his hand toward the suffering men, presenting the emperor as a compassionate leader concerned with the human consequences of war.

Gros's painting is particularly remarkable for its dramatic emotional intensity, realistic portrayal of battlefield suffering and striking winter atmosphere. The contrast between Napoleon's composed figure and the desperate soldiers surrounding him creates a powerful visual narrative. The artist combines detailed Napoleonic military uniforms, expressive figures, snow-covered terrain and atmospheric lighting to capture both the grandeur and brutality of early 19th-century warfare.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 521 × 784 cm. Commissioned under Napoleon's rule and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1808, the painting was intended to commemorate the emperor's conduct after the battle. Although it presents an idealized image of Napoleon's compassion, its emotional realism and monumental scale helped establish Gros as a leading figure in French historical painting and an important precursor of Romanticism.
