Author: Karl Spruner von Merz
Year: 1860
This is a reproduction print of the historical map “Deutschland von Rudolf von Habsburg bis Maximilian I, 1275–1495”, created by Karl Spruner von Merz, engraved with contributions from E. Luther, and published by Justus Perthes in Gotha in 1860.
The map presents Germany and Central Europe from the reign of Rudolf of Habsburg to Maximilian I, illustrating the complex political geography of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages. Numerous duchies, principalities, bishoprics and other territories are distinguished with hand-colored boundaries.
Three inset maps provide additional historical context, including Germany around 1350, the Battle of Marchfeld (Stillfried) in 1278, and the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322. Cities, rivers, mountain ranges and historical place names are shown in extensive detail, while hachures depict the terrain.
The original hand-colored map measured approximately 37 × 33 cm and was produced at a scale of 1:3,800,000 as part of Spruner’s renowned historical atlas series.
