Artist: François-Louis-Joseph Watteau (Watteau de Lille)
Year: 1798–1799

This is a reproduction print of the historical painting “The Battle of the Pyramids” (La Bataille des Pyramides), created by French painter François-Louis-Joseph Watteau, also known as Watteau de Lille, between 1798 and 1799. The artwork depicts the Battle of the Pyramids, fought on July 21, 1798, during Napoleon Bonaparte's military expedition to Egypt. The confrontation took place near Embabeh, close to Cairo, and resulted in a decisive French victory over the forces of the Mamluk rulers of Egypt.

The battle formed part of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798–1801, an ambitious expedition intended to expand French influence in the eastern Mediterranean and threaten British commercial interests connected with India. Napoleon's army faced Mamluk forces commanded by Murad Bey, whose cavalry was renowned for its mobility, horsemanship and individual combat skills. To counter the Mamluk cavalry charges, Napoleon organized his infantry into large defensive squares, supported by artillery positioned to repel attacks from multiple directions. This disciplined formation proved highly effective against the mounted warriors and helped secure the French victory.

Watteau's painting captures the intensity and spectacle of the confrontation between the French army and the Mamluk cavalry. The composition presents a dramatic battlefield filled with mounted soldiers, military formations, weapons and clouds of smoke rising above the fighting. The contrast between the European troops and the richly equipped Mamluk horsemen emphasizes the different military traditions brought into conflict during the campaign. Through dynamic movement, expressive figures and carefully arranged groups of combatants, the artist conveys the confusion and violence of battle while presenting a vivid historical narrative.

Executed in oil on canvas, the painting reflects the growing interest in contemporary military events during the French Revolutionary period. François-Louis-Joseph Watteau was a French painter associated with Lille and a member of the artistic family that also included the celebrated painter Antoine Watteau. His historical compositions combined dramatic storytelling with the conventions of late 18th-century French painting.

Although Napoleon's victory opened the way to Cairo, the Egyptian expedition later encountered major difficulties, particularly after the French fleet was destroyed by the British at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798. Nevertheless, the Battle of the Pyramids became one of the most recognizable episodes of Napoleon's early military career. Today, “The Battle of the Pyramids” remains a striking artistic representation of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Revolutionary Wars, Mamluk Egypt and the Egyptian campaign of 1798.
