Artist: Ilya Repin
Year: 1880–1891
Historical period depicted: Late 17th century

This is a reproduction print of the celebrated historical painting “Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks” (Zaporozhtsy), created by Ilya Repin between 1880 and 1891. The monumental artwork depicts a group of Zaporozhian Cossacks composing a defiant and humorous letter to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV, inspired by a famous legend from the late 17th century. The painting is one of Repin's most recognizable masterpieces and a celebrated representation of Ukrainian Cossack culture, military traditions and the spirit of independence. The original painting is held by the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.

The historical background of the artwork lies in the turbulent history of the Zaporozhian Sich, the fortified military and political center of the Cossacks in the lands of present-day Ukraine. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Zaporozhian Cossacks developed a distinctive military community known for its elected leadership, cavalry and infantry traditions, and frequent campaigns along the Dnieper River and the Black Sea. Their history was closely connected with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire and the expanding Tsardom of Russia.

According to the popular legend, Sultan Mehmed IV demanded that the Zaporozhian Cossacks submit to Ottoman authority. Rather than accepting his demands, the Cossacks supposedly gathered to compose an outrageous reply filled with mockery, insults and irreverent humor. The authenticity of the famous correspondence remains disputed, and the story is generally understood as part of Cossack folklore rather than a securely documented diplomatic exchange.

Repin portrays a lively gathering of Cossack warriors crowded around a wooden table, where a scribe records their collective response. The men burst into laughter, exchange jokes and suggest increasingly outrageous phrases, while others lean forward to participate in the writing. The composition is filled with expressive faces, elaborate mustaches, shaved Cossack hairstyles, traditional clothing, weapons and richly detailed historical costumes. Among the figures is the legendary Cossack leader Ivan Sirko, traditionally associated with the supposed exchange of letters.

The painting's extraordinary energy comes from its variety of facial expressions, dynamic gestures and carefully arranged group composition. Repin devoted years to researching Cossack history, studying historical objects and gathering visual references for the work. Rather than presenting a formal military victory, he chose a moment of collective laughter and defiance, emphasizing the Cossacks' independence, camaraderie and irreverent attitude toward imperial authority.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 203 × 358 cm. Completed in 1891, it became one of the defining achievements of Repin's career and an important example of 19th-century historical realism.

Today, “Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks” remains an iconic historical painting associated with Ukrainian history, the Zaporozhian Sich, Cossack traditions, the Ottoman Empire and the political history of Eastern Europe.
