Artist: Karl Bryullov
Year: 1830–1833

This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “The Last Day of Pompeii”, created by Karl Bryullov between 1830 and 1833. One of the most celebrated masterpieces of 19th-century Russian Romantic painting, the artwork depicts the destruction of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The original painting is housed at the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The monumental composition portrays the inhabitants of Pompeii desperately attempting to escape the volcanic catastrophe, as buildings collapse, statues fall and the sky glows with fire and lightning. Families struggle to protect their children, people carry elderly relatives to safety, and terrified crowds flee through the streets. The scene captures the chaos and human suffering caused by one of the most famous natural disasters in ancient history.

Bryullov's painting is particularly remarkable for its dramatic lighting, powerful emotional expressions and extraordinary attention to archaeological detail. The contrast between the fiery volcanic sky and the illuminated figures creates an atmosphere of overwhelming destruction. Inspired by his visits to the archaeological excavations at Pompeii, the artist combined historical research, classical architecture and Romantic drama to reconstruct the final moments of the ancient city.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 456.5 × 651 cm. First exhibited in Italy in 1833, the painting brought Bryullov international recognition and became one of the defining achievements of Russian historical art. Its immense scale, vivid storytelling and depiction of Ancient Rome's most famous volcanic disaster make it an exceptional example of 19th-century European painting.
