Artist: John Trumbull
Year: 1819
This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “Declaration of Independence”, created by John Trumbull and completed in 1819. One of the most recognizable works of American historical art, the painting depicts the presentation of the draft Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress on June 28, 1776, a pivotal moment in the founding of the United States. The original painting is displayed in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The composition portrays the Committee of Five presenting the Declaration of Independence to John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress, inside the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, now known as Independence Hall. At the center stands Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Surrounding them are delegates representing the thirteen American colonies.
Trumbull carefully arranged 47 historical figures, many based on portraits taken from life or other contemporary references, creating a remarkable visual record of the American founding generation. The painting is frequently mistaken for a depiction of the signing of the Declaration on July 4, 1776, but it actually represents the presentation of the document's draft to Congress. Its balanced composition, architectural detail and individual portraits reflect the traditions of Neoclassical historical painting.
Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 365.8 × 548.6 cm (12 × 18 feet). Trumbull, who served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War, devoted much of his artistic career to commemorating the nation's founding events. This monumental painting remains one of the most celebrated representations of American independence, democracy and the birth of the United States.
